Dark spots: kojic acid, vitamin C or niacinamide, which to choose?
Share
Dark spots (pigment spots) appear due to sun, hormones, age or after inflammation (spots, irritation). Several actives can help reduce their appearance. Here is how to find your way.
1. Sun protection, the foundation
Without sun protection, no active is enough: UV relaunches pigment production and the spots come back. Apply SPF50 every morning, for example our SPF50 Sun Stick.
2. Kojic acid: targeting spots
Kojic acid is used in cosmetics for its action on the appearance of dark spots. It suits targeted use, in a regular routine. Our Kojic Acid Dark Spot Cream and our Targeted Dark Spot Care with 1% Kojic Acid contain it at 1%. To be avoided on damaged skin, and tested first on a small area.
3. Vitamin C: radiance of the complexion
An antioxidant, vitamin C helps protect the skin and revive the radiance of a dull complexion. It suits the morning routine well: discover the Vitamin C Serum. On sensitive skin, start every other day.
4. Niacinamide: evening out gently
Well tolerated, niacinamide helps even out skin tone and refine skin texture. It suits sensitive skin: see the Exosome & Niacinamide Serum and our niacinamide guide.
What to choose?
- Well-localized spots: kojic acid, as a targeted care.
- Dull, uneven complexion: vitamin C in the morning.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: niacinamide, then add one active at a time.
How long before seeing an effect?
Allow several weeks of consistency: cell renewal takes time. If a spot changes in appearance (size, outline, color) or bleeds, consult a dermatologist: some spots need a diagnosis.
During pregnancy, ask your doctor before using a dark spot care.
